Review : A Storm of Swords by George R. R. Martin

Title : A Storm of Swords (A Song of Ice and Fire #3)
Author : George R. R. Martin
Publication date : March 04, 2003 by Bantam

The day I reached the final page of A Storm of Swords all I can say is "geez, is this book even real? I know that sounds ridiculous, but to tell you the truth, until now I still cannot believe what I read. This book, I mean this series is nothing like others I have read and it did a great job making me raised my eyebrows. The whole time I read this book, I keep on searching where the real hero is, and I didn't find any. Am I just to naive to expect every fantasy book to have one?

Now let's talk about the plot of A Storm of Swords. The war in Westeros continues and it's as violent as ever. Kings falls like leaves in Autumn. The Wildlings are getting more and more confident and are planning to climb The Wall. The Black Brothers Panic, Jon is believed to be a turn-cloak and Stannis is still busy with his Melisandre. Frankly I cannot even describe what the book is all about, so yes, you may just ignore my ramblings.

If you feel the A Clash of Kings is an intriguing book, wait till you read A Storm of Swords. I hate to tell you this, but you may want to prepare yourself because there will be so many characters die in this book. When I say characters, I mean main characters. You've been warned, take slow if you don't fancy yourself some heart attacks.

As for characters, I really dislike Robb. He's so immature and he's an oath breaker. I mean, come on, Robb, you're a king, act like one, respect yourself! I cannot stand him. Period. In the other hand, I thought I will dislike the Lannisters (except for Tyrion), but this book changed my mind. I believe I am kind of fond of Jaime. Despite of him being called the Kingslayer or other notorious traits, he's much different person when you read from his point of view. He has a heart, ladies and gentleman, a good heart to be precised. Catelyn is another boring character, I couldn't wait until she finished her point of view. I had this big temptation to just skim and skip, but I am glad I didn't do it.

The number of death in A Storm of Swords makes me want to re-title the book. I think "A Ton of Deaths" would suit it better. The moral of the story is, please do not invest your emotion by picking a favorite character. You just never know what Ser George is planning for him/her in the next pages. Come to think of it, I think the main enemy of this series is the author. He is putting a sword on every character's neck and no one knows when and whom will be slitted.

Now it's time for my favorite quote:

"Her name is Brienne," Jaime said. "Brienne, the maid of Tarth. You are still maiden, I hope?"
Her broad homely face turned red."Yes."
"Oh good," Jaime said. "I only rescue maidens"

One more thing, what a way to make an epilogue!

Enough said. Martin might be the cruelest author ever, but gosh, he knows how to tel a story. He knows it really well. 5 rating, without a doubt. By the way, I cannot wait for season 4 of TV series.

Now, let's talk about you! Are you upset that Ser George Arr Arr Martin loves to kill his characters?
