Title : China Rich Girlfriend (Crazy Rich Asians #2)
Author : Kevin Kwan
Publication date : June 16th 2015
by Knopf Doubleday
After being quite impressed with Crazy Rich Asians, I couldn't wait to read the sequel. There were so many unveiled mysteries about this conglomerates, I believe and I had to find a conclusion because on the first book, I was left in open ending.
After their wedding, Rachel and Nicholas Young went to China to spend some time with Rachel's long lost family. Things got awry the second they set their foot there, but they wouldn't jump into conclusions. Rachel's brother, Carlton Bao tried to be friendly and introduced himself, along with his super rich girlfriend, Collette Bing. As the story proceed, Rachel discovered the dark mysteries about Carlton and of course, Collette.
China Rich Girlfriend is equally enjoyable as its predecessor. Although, if I had to pick, I'd say the first book is a little happier. China Rich Girlfriend is darker. So, if the first book is about those rich people spending money to pamper their selves, China Rich Girlfriend is more about how they use their money to cover their dirty work. It's a two different topic, so it's a little unfair to compare them just like that.
My complain is still the same, though. Rachel and Nick didn't really do anything. Their friends and families are actually the stars in this book. It's annoying, because main characters should be the stars in their own book. It's the story about them, after all. I kept on waiting on when Rachel and Nick would shine and stand up for themselves, but it didn't happen. As you know already, I hate hopeless antagonists.
Let's talk about Astrid, my favorite character. I am glad that I got to know what was going on in their marriage. Things went to my liking only to twist and turn at the plot proceed. Astrid and Michael are the most complex and human characters in this book and it is something to appreciate.
When you came back into my life, I realized two things. First, that I never stopped loving you. You were my first love, and I have loved you since the day I met you at Fort Cunning church when we were fifteen. And second, I also realized that, unlike me, you hand moved on.
I don't know if there will be a third book. Considering the ending, there is a possibility however, if it stops here, the ending is also have given enough conclusion. Here's another quote and I am glad someone finally said it:
We didn't make some crazy fortune overnight, and we won't ever need to hire some fancy butler to teach us manners. You don't live in the real world, you never have, so I am not even going to try arguing with you -- it's way below my pay grade to bother. You sit in your perfect little eco-luxury bubble, while your father's companies are the biggest polluters in China. You may have all the money in the world, but you are the most morally impoverished child I've ever met! Grow up, Collette, and get a life!"
4 ratings for China Rich Girlfriend. I wish Rachel and Nick were more likable. It is mentioned often that both of them are professors, but they never show their intelligence in dialogue. Go ahead and read this series if you are bored and need an entertaining read. What books do you recently finished? Were they good? Are they part of series?
