When The Book Isn't as Good as The Cover

I love anything pretty and that includes pretty book covers. I adore ones that are colorful, mixed with lovely illustration and great fonts and voila, it catches my attention. There are times when I am so in love with them I feel like framing and hanging them as wall arts. Well, truth to be told, not all that glitters are gold, you will find that not all those cute stuff have good story behind them.

In fact, I had been trapped for so many times already. I am an idiot, obviously, no matter how many times I have been fooled, I am still attracted to pretty covers. Maybe this explains why it's impossible for one to be sensible when he/she is in love? *shrugs*

You know, when I am being lied to, I feel betrayed. I hate those covers for making me believe that the sucky stories worth my time. I hate them because they deceive me into thinking that the characters are the person at the front of the book (well, I found out that sometimes book cover designers would just put whatever they think suits the book best). It makes my stomach churn especially if the book is a pain to read and oh, I usually throw snarky remarks that the cover is the only thing nice when it happens.

While I believe that every book cover should be as artistic as possible, it still has to be truthful to the content. Don't put a warrior outside if the characters don't even fight. Don't place a white girl picture if the heroine is Japanese. Easy, right? It's 2015, you can find a book cover accurate enough for your book with a single mouse click.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I see this happening more in YA literature. They tend to have extremely attractive covers (gorgeous dress or a character with coolest weapon while in the book, she doesn't really fight). This is also makes me reluctant to add YA books on my to-read list.

Yes, I love YA but YA is totally guilty of this. I always buy books on impulse by looking at the cover . Have to stop doing that. I can't remember what books I am disappointed with as not as good as I hope to be when I see the cover. Maybe some obscure titles I guess. But I don't have high hopes on most books I bought on discounts. Hehe.

And I read this recently : http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_eye/2015/08/25/fla...

Never realized that even book covers have trends. But now I totally see that they do!

Oh and then take a look at this : http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2015/09/03/ic...

Maybe in the future. Or ebook eh.

Gosh, I didn't know that book cover has its own trend. Not that I mind, those in the articles are so pretty. Maybe it's also the "trend" a few years back where all the book covers showed shirtless vampire dudes on the front. Phew, thankfully we have e-readers now lol :D
Publishing Houses know we love a good gorgeous cover. It's almost impossible to pass them up; we want them in our shelves and they know it, so they use it for their own benefit. It's not the first time I've bought a beautiful book on the outside but that had nothing beautiful about it within. And, apparently there is nothing much we can do about it... or so they think. It's true I'm a sucker for a beautiful cover but I'm more picky now when it comes to my books, especially YA.

*Sighs* You're right, Noelia, there's nothing much we can do about it besides being pickier. Then again, maybe we'll only end up picking the prettiest cover (again!) It's a never-ending mess, I guess. Ah, YA books, why are you so hard to appeal to me? =/
I LOVE YA, but I agree that in the past, the covers haven't reflected the contents. But things are getting much better - there's a big emphasis on decorative typography as cover art now (see Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon, for instance), which is a trend I LOVE. And also, terrible covers aren't limited to YA novels... I've seen plenty of misleading covers in adult books too!

I love the current trend of pretty typography on the cover. It makes me want to hang them on my walls. It's good that book cover has it own trend, which is a good chance of many great artist out there to show their talent.
Yes, sometimes I do get sucked in by a beautiful cover and sometimes the story does let me down! But I am someone who doesn't mind picking up a book from its cover - I know that is something I do and will always do. I am annoyed when the cover is portraying something completely different than the content though, and in most cases because publishing houses decide to decorate it so that it will sell.

Hmm, after all they're a business, they'll do whatever it takes to increase their sales. Hopefully they'll hear us and be more selective in choosing book covers. Happy readers means happy business for them.
