Review : When We Fall by Emily Liebert

Title : When We Fall
Author : Emily Liebert
Publication date: September 2nd 2014 by NAL

I like a story about women in a small town. Perhaps it's because I used to live in a very small town and the possibility of being able to relate with the characters is a good reason to start reading it. When We Fall is one of them. Take a look at the cover! I love it, it's so beautifully designed. Well, what can I say? I am a sucker for pretty covers.

When We Fall is a novel about women of a small town called Wincourt. It has been 11 years since Alison Parker's husband, Jack died and she she decides that it is time for her to move on. Along with her son, Logan, Alison moves back to her hometown to live near her parents hoping it will ease the pain. She the meets Charlotte Crane at Logan's school, a local socialite and they become friends.

Let's talk about the writing style! Gosh I cannot wait. Well, some of you may know that I am a fan of Sarah Addison Allen. Liebert's writing style is pretty similar. Please note that When We Fall is not a magical realism novel, so you won't find anything whimsical in it, but you get the idea. Liebert's writing style is like cotton candy, it's sweet and fluffy makes you happy and it's so easy to enjoy. Having said that, she has done a great job portraying the characters and their complexities.

The story itself is very realistic. I mean, I know that some women tend to be cliquey and there could be a poisonous member in it, but they still let them involved in their life. A sad but true fact. Alison, as a character is a very sweet person, but she could be very naive thanks to her emotional wound that causes her to hide herself from the rest of the world. Charlotte in the other hand is extremely bored and stressed but she just won't admit it. In this book, every character has her own good and bad sides and that's a good thing, if you ask me.

My only complain with this book is the predictability. I know where the story is going, though not precisely since Liebert put some "spices" I never see them coming. It makes me less annoyed, by the way. I wish the twist and turns were not so obvious though.

Time for a favorite quote. This actually made my heart skipped a beat. Since there are some swear words, I need to censored that part a bit.
"F you."
"No, F you, Charlotte. F you and your perfect life. Or should I say the perfect life you pretend to have, because we all know it's a facade. F you and your fancy house and your fancy cars and your fancy f ing clothing and all that stuff that doesn't mean anything. F you. You don't even want me to be happy. Because if I am happy then you won't be the one who has everything anymore. And that's all that matters to you. Isn't that right? Well, guess what, Charlotte? Look who has everything now. Me. Good luck finding yourself another sister."
4 rating for When We Fall. If only it's less predictable, I'd be more than happy to give it 5. I recommend this book for anyone who are looking for a nice quick read. It's real quick, I finished it only within 24 hour thanks to its page turner nature. I am so glad to find a quick book that actually meaningful. Now, how about you? Have you any quick reads you'd like to recommend?
