Every bookworms must face thing called reading slump once in a while. How addicted you are to book is irrelevant. In my case, these are times when I just want to lay down on my bed without a book in my hand. There are also times when even the catchiest title doesn't grab my attention. Yes, it happens and each person has his/her own unique reading slump signs. In this post, I'd like to point out some of the most common symptoms and how to overcome it.
Books just don't seem as appealing
...even the thought of picking what to read next seems like a daunting task. See, book picking is the funnest thing a bookworm can do and that's why most of us have two-mile-long TBR list. You're also not looking forward to your next book shopping spree. If you experience this, my friends, you might be in a reading slump.
How to cope : let it go. The slump is there for a reason. It could be one of the many ways your brain use to tell you that you need to rest. Rest assure that it is normal and since reading is your passion, you'll gain back your momentum sooner rather than later. If the books don't interest you, stay away from them for a while. People say you'll miss something when you don't have it anymore, maybe it will work in this case.
Finishing a book takes forever
Take a look at the book you're currently reading and think about the day you started. Does it seem like a decade ago? If so, it could mean that it's just not your cup of tea or you're bored with that particular genre. Either way, you might be in slump.
How to cope : put the book down and take a breath. In my case, a book outside my favorite genre can help in getting my interest back. I am a fantasy and historical fiction gal, when I am bored, I pick up a funny chicklit book. Well, I know that it's not necessarily out-of-my-comfort-zone genre, still it's not my first choice, if you ask me. Your mind could crave something different and it's always fun to try something new!
Book stores and all their discount are easy to resist
There's no curiosity when you walk pass a book store. The discount banner from your favorite online book shop doesn't entice you to click. For some people with spending habit problem, this could actually help them manage their money. This my friends, happened to me. Fortunately, yeah and I actually enjoyed it!
How to cope: frankly I don't cope with it. As for this one, I enjoy it while it lasts and usually it won't be long. I'd just buy something else instead (which doesn't help, in many cases). If you could resist the temptation to buy other stuffs, more power to you! Some of us are not that strong.
Now let's talk about you! Have you ever been in reading slump? How long does it usually last? What were your signs and how did you cope with them? Please share!
