Why I Rarely Put Books on DNF List

First of of all, let me clarify that I am not against DNF (a.k.a Did Not Finish) list. On the contrary, I support it. None should torture his/her self for books they dislike. In my case it's an irony, though. I am a believer of it, but so far in my in my book blogging journey, I only have put one book on my DNF list. Granted, I only have read around a hundred books, a much lower number compared to avid readers out there, so maybe it explains my low DNF ratio. Or maybe I am just lucky the darn book hasn't approach me yet?

The reason I write this post is because I feel you should never feel guilty about quitting on books. There's no point in hurting yourself with something silly like boring books. Having said that, the main reason why I rarely put books on DNF list is because I am one of the most curious persons you can find. Whenever I pick something to read, I will always be interested in how it ends, no matter how lame the book is. This, ladies and gentlemen, what keeps me going and my curiosity is pretty darn strong.

The book in my DNF list isn't boring per se, but it's extremely repetitive so turning the pages is an agony because I knew the same passages would be repeated once again. That, my friend, killed my curiosity. It's not that I gave up reading it, but I've had enough of it that I feel there is no need to continue at all.

I don't know what else will make me DNF a book. To me, writing style is very important and when it doesn't suit my taste, I think it's another recipe for DNF. Having said that, maybe I am just a patient reader that it takes more than a lame book to bore me.

Let's talk about you! How long is your DNF list? Are you easy to get bored? What is the recipe to your DNF list? Please share!

I only really shelve something as DNF if it is terribly written or just bugging me to death and im never going to pick it up again. I've quite a few books last year that were actually quite good it was more due to the fact that I was busy and lost momentum with the story but I plan on giving them a second go. It does kind of bug me when I don't finish a book though, but like you said there is so much good stuff to read out there!

I think I will face the lost momentum sooner rather than later. The more you read, the greater chance of finding a boring book :p What you stated of giving another go is actually a good idea!
I've got 3 unfinished books, so far, in the last 2 years. Two non-fiction books: one history of Poland (dully written), the other one - Nabokov's explanation of Russian literature to USA students (Poland & Russia are neighbours, with mingled history, reading Russian literature at school, and I learned Russian) which was a mistake to read a book written from lectures for students who don't know much about Russia. I couldn't stand the English transcription of Russian names instead of Polish, and lack of Russian alphabet, which made understanding quotes more tricky. :D The last one was in Korean, I lost momentum and put it away. :D
Usually the books I select to reading are carefully selected, so I don't have a lot unread or badly scored books.

Which makes me wonder, how many languages do you speak, Kama? :D Looks like you read variety of books, do you have any favorite genre?
I speak Polish (my native), English, Indonesian, Japanese. Basic Korean (the book was little text with illustrations ;) ) I have forgotten Russian and Latin. I try to read books in other languages to polish my language skills.
My favourite genres are fantasy & science fiction, but I read non-fiction books and history-related books (often about the history of my hometown, Warsaw), one of my favourite books are also historical fiction (ancient times, like Quo Vadis, it was published by Gramedia ;) ). I try to read books from countries around the world (I made a challenge for this) despite the genres. I'm not fond of romance and YA.

I got a few DNF. Some of em I was in the midst of reading then my mother took my books to her home. LOL. So I couldnt be bothered to take it back. (not that interesting to compels me)

One is Sophie's World. I read that when I was nauseous during the first trimester of my pregnancy. Then I coudnt read it anymore because I am always feeling queasy then. Now everytime I look at the book now I felt like puking. Heh.

Another some chick lit book that is SO BAD that I just couldnt bother.

Lol, it's weird how certain books reminds us of particular time, right! Reading a book that reminds you of a morning sickness is definitely not fun. I also have that kind of book, but this one reminds me of good time. It's A Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (how I still mourn for him!), I finished the book during a flight so it reminds me of my sweet traveling time :)
