Review : Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith

Title : Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter
Author : Seth Grahame-Smith
Publication date: March 2nd 2010 by Grand Central Publishing

Alright, those of you who have no idea who Abraham Lincoln is must be living under the rocks or hadn't pay attention in history class *chuckles* My first reaction when I read the book's title was like "what on Earth! Man, I have to read this book!" And it happened last year, I totally forgot about it and I finally picked it up and read it last month. Such a long wait time, I know, but when it comes to choosing books to read, I am easy to distract.

The book is "alternate" version of Abraham Lincoln's life. When I say "alternate" it means that you should not take it too seriously nor use it as your historical reference. It's a fictional book to begin with, for Heaven's sake.

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter is based on historical events, but since I don't know much about American history, I didn't know if those stated in this book were accurate. It shows Abraham Lincoln childhood, teenage years when he decided to kill every vampire in America, became a lawyer and his political career. I have to admit that there are some scene that made me sad, especially when Abe lost his sons (it's not spoiler, it's a historical fact), I couldn't help but cry.

Even though many people say this book is full of gore, I personally didn't find it creepy. I didn't find the book extremely interesting in the first place. Since the it is about Lincoln being a vampire hunter, I somehow expect it to be more engaging. I mean he was a strong political figure, he was a freedom fighter, he struggled for slaves' right, I expect him to be a kick ass hero too, so don't blame me for that *giggles*

There are cool scenes in this book, don't get me wrong, however the boring scenes are also there, so be prepared to yawn once in a while. My favorite part of the books is actually Abe's journal where the story is told with first person point of views. The narration, which is told with third person point of view has nothing special about it and it really makes this book to be one of the hardest to review. The idea of Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter is actually brilliant, but the writing style might not do it justice.

Time for quotes, yay!

"Why haven't you killed me!" His answer came calmly from the next room. "Some people, Abraham, are just too interesting to kill."

If you are a fan of historical fiction, why not read it just to refresh your mind. For horror lovers, I think the book is a less creepy to your liking, but since it has vampire hunting in it, you might as well like it. 3 rating for Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, it's good enough and still worth my time.

Your turn, what did you think of this novel? Have you watched the movie?
