Review : The Ugly Sister by Jane Fallon

Tittle : The Ugly Sister
Author: Jane Fallon
Published September 29th 2011 by Penguin

When I the first chapter of this book, I thought it would be a funny and witty novel. Even the book title sounds a little humorous (to me, at least), and I was so ready to be entertained. But I was wrong. Completely wrong, in fact because instead of giving me laughter, The Ugly sister gave me the opposite. It is far from a happy book.

Abi Attwood constantly lived under her supermodel sister Cleo and it kind of makes her sad. Being famous at a very young age, Cleo turned into a very annoying cow and she even takes her husband for granted and expect everything to go her way. Cleo decides to get back into modelling and contacts Abi so she could stay with her during summer so Abi, whether she likes it or not, has to be the unpaid babysitter.

I can tell you that I actually love Fallon's writing style. It got me hooked, even during the boring scenes. I noticed that there were repetitive parts in this book that is a little too whiny for my liking. For example, Jonty (Cleo's husband) seems to be cooking dinner all the time. Okay, I get it he has to pay attention to his wife nutrition (because she wants to stay skinny), so she doesn't starve herself to death, but I don't have to be reminded all the friggin' time, seriously..

Speaking of characters, I can relate to Abi. I don't have a sister, but I know how it feels to actually miss a sibling. Still, I don't think Cleo is realistic, because she's completely bad to the bone. I mean, really? Alright, maybe it's because I don't know how selfish a celeb can be *sighs* She cares about no one but herself and her modelling career. As for Abi, she complains too much sometimes. If she doesn't like staying there, why not get out of the house immediately and enjoy her old life as usual.

Now, let's talk about the ending. I hate it! It ends, just like that. There are too many unfinished business in The Ugly Sister and I, as a reader, am left annoyed. I just loathe this kind of ending, because I have invested my time reading the book, at least give me a good conclusion, that's all I ask.

Here's a favorite (read: random) quote of the book:
Oh god, she's hoping he hasn't picked up on the vibes or the hormones or whatever it is that must be positively oozing out of her whenever she's around him.
3 rating for The Ugly Sister. It was a good story with a bad ending. Not a good combo, if you ask me. Your turn, have you felt disappointed by an ending of a book?
