Phew, I finally reach the last page of A feast for Crows. What a long and exhausting read! I think I will take a break, a long break from reading A Song of Ice and Fire books because for one, the sixth book will not be released anytime soon, so I am not holding my breath. Two, my mind is very occupied now, and I really need to read something light and easy, anything that is free of politics and deceit. Alright, let's talk about A Feast for Crows.
This fourth book is like a brand new installment of the series. Martin took a whole new world (read : location) as the setting and if you are rather familiar with Westeros, you might find this book a little too "foreign". Cersei now gets her own point of views and she fills like 3/4 part of the book. Yeah, you'll get into the queen's mind, a lot! Jaime grows even more interesting though I still cannot forgive what he had done to Bran, but in this book, looks like he's not as bad as I think. There are also many stories from the Iron Land, and Dorne with objectives of their own.
Well, to me, the story from the foreign land doesn't really interest me. They don't seem to be very important and the book itself will do just fine without it. What I don't like the most is we I didn't get to read about Tyrion, Bran, Daenarys and Jon. The don't appear in Feast for Crows, the only recurring character is Arya, Sansa and Jaime. Though it fills with new characters point of view, I still feel the story to be lack of charms compared to its predecessors. I am emotionally attached to Tyrion and I can't believe I don't know what happens to him in this book.
Speaking of new character, let's talk about Cersei. Well, she's not exactly new, but her point of view is. I still can't believe myself because no matter how deceitful she is, I cannot hate her. There, I said it. She's cruel, yes, but in the other hand she only wants her children to be safe. I am a mother myself, and I can relate to her, I mean I will do anything to keep my children safe. Anything. Too bad we have to wait until book four before getting to know her much better.
Having said that, Feast for Crows is a bit "empty" compared to the first three books. The third book is awesome so please don't blame me for putting much hope and expectation on it. To be honest, there is almost nothing important happens in think book. I could care less about Dorne and the Greyjoys of the iron Islands, but since I am officially obsessed with this series, I cannot hate it after all. Her's my favorite quote of it:
"What mad cruel god would give a man eyes and tell him he must forever keep them shut, and never look at all the beauty in the world?
Only a monster god, a demon of the darkness."
3 rating for A Feast for Crows. I still love this series no matter what (though I am taking a break from it for now). I am still wishing everyday that book 6 to be released sooner and hopefully it is really worth the wait. Now, your turn. Do you also find A Feast for Crows to be not that exciting?
