Like some of you may have known, I always call myself a fantasy lover. Yet, I have my own secret and I am here to tell you about it. I adore fantasy, but this is the first time I read an epic fantasy.. shhh! While many of my previously read books were aimed for young adult, I am glad that I finally find one that is for older reader like myself. Bear with me, it has been 10 years since I graduated high school, I am sure I finally outgrown them. I crave for something different, something more mature that can deliver chills on my spine and then yes, that's why I picked Game of Thrones.
Eddard a.k.a. Ned Stark was surprised by the news of his brother in law's death Jon Arryn, who was also the Hand of The King. The king himself, Robert Barratheon came to Ned and asked him to fill that vacant position. However, Ned had no desire to be near the throne, in the other hand his wife, Catelyn Stark ensure him that if he wanted to find out more about Jon Arryn's death, being the Hand of The King would make the job a lot easier.
If you truly wish to read this series, then ignore my description above, because Game of Thrones is a lot more than that. The story is so complex that it is impossible to make a short description for it. I love this book with all my heart, this is one very few book that didn't bore or exhaust me, no matter how thick it is. Yes, it contains a lot of pages but the plot is worth every piece of it.
What I adore the most of it is the unpredictability. You'll find out that every character has his/her own motive and it's impossible to pin point the real hero or the villain. In this book, my favorite character would be Daenarys Targaryen. She was very fragile and vulnerable at first but as the story goes, she got stronger and even more powerful than I can imagine. George R.R. Martin really knows how to develop his characters into life, to me they're so human.
A few warnings though, there are some scenes that you may find disturbing and very graphic but they're not the main point of this book, so I'd just shrug and keep reading (maybe you should too!). Speaking of point of view, this book is a great example for how a multiple point of view book should be. It's the author that narrates the story, however I can feel the character's personality and of course, their emotion. It doesn't confuse the readers as some of other books do.
Now, it's time for a favorite quote:
“There is only one god and his name is Death. And there is only one thing we say to Death: “Not today.”
5 rating for Game of Thrones. This book is definitely a must read for fantasy lovers who are getting bored of the similar stories. It is worth the the hype and most importantly, it is worth my time. Your turn, what did you think of this book? Do you like the TV series?
