I picked A Good Day to Pie because it is set in a pie shop. Now, how tempting could it be? A murder mystery mixed with sweet and tasty pie. What a great combination! It is also my first time reading cozy mystery and I can say that I was quite excited. A murder story doesn't have to scary, right?
Hanna Denton goes back to her small hometown to take over her Grannie's pie shop. Business is slow because the citizens tend compare her pies with her Grannie's. Hanna has to find ways to attract new costumers. Yet, it doesn't end there.
Hanna's grannie is then held as a suspect to a murder of her bridge game rival, Mary Grant. Things becomes more complicated when she meets Sam Genovese, a chief police officer, Hanna's old sweet crush. Now she has to do all she can to convince cute Sam that grandma is innocent.
Now what do I think of this book? Well, to be honest, I used to always finish whatever book I start reading, but this time is an exception. I am halfway through it and I can't take it anymore. A Good Day to Pie isn't an enjoyable book at all (read : for me). I very rarely give up on books but the narration of this story is very repetitive. I don't need to be reminded that the main character strongly believes that her grandmother is innocent. I know that already, since the first pages.
Now, talking about the main character, Hanna Denton is unlikeable one. I find her to be annoying. She keeps on bugging the police officer and he keeps on telling her to stay out of the investigation - over and over. This is the 90% content of the book. Phew! And, oh, I forgot! There are also repetitive explanation of him not wearing police uniform. How boring can that be?
I believe that this book has a very good potential, but unfortunately I think it needs more work to make the story at least, believable. I mean, do police really use a polygraph test on people? I know they do, in some cases however, it only works on yes or no question, right?
1 rating for A Good Day to Pie .
