Well, I took a long time to finish The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 
. When I first heard the tittle of this book, I was quite sure that the story has something to do with China *giggles*. But well, that was months ago when I didn't know the hype. One day, I saw the trailer of the movie and noticed Daniel Craig in it. I said to myself well, this must not be just an ordinary book.

To tell you the truth, it has been sitting on my to-read list for a while. I was terrified by its thickness, but then somehow I managed to pick it. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a complex story of a journalist, Mikael Blomkvist and an antisocial computer hacker, Lisbeth Salander who were working together to handle a murder case that had been unsolved for more that thirty years. The case itself involved a prominent and bourgeois family with makes it more complicated. Six months of investigation, the work seemed to lead to a dead end. However, when the were finally put together, they found out something very disturbing was going on.

It's my first time I wish I speak Swedish. I am sure reading a book in its native language enables us to absorb the story better. Having said that, I found the narration to be very clear. The story itself has A LOT of characters, sometimes I forgot who they were and what they were up to. The author tends to use the last name only, so when it comes to the big Vanger family, I was kind of confused of which Vanger he was talking about.
I think I have to tell you that I almost gave up reading the book. About 1/3 of it was a complex back story which almost has nothing to do with the mystery. When I was within the first chapters, I thought the story would be about some economic or white collar crime, well, something like that. But I was wrong. I had to get into more than half of the book to find out its true story.
The main characters, Mikael and Lisbeth are very interesting and likable. Lisbeth, for example is not an ordinary girl. She might be antisocial, but she wouldn't let anyone who hurted her get away freely. She always found a way for revenge which makes her a kick ass heroine.
For those of you who almost can't stand graphic violent description (like me), you may find some of the scenes to be very disturbing. Okay, I'll give you a little detail. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a book about sexual harassment, incest, cold blooded murder and a serial rapist, a combo of world's most despicable crime.

4 rating for the book. If only it's not stuffed with excessive back story at the beginning, I'd definitely give it 5. I am glad that I didn't gave up though because it's really worth my time.

The story is gripping..for those who love crime thrillers..its just way too awesome..The characters are strong,they leave an impression on your mind..The plot is nice,agreed there could have been a few less pages where the book goes dragging a bit,but then it all adds up to your reading experience and isn't that boring..I liked it very much and even went on reading the other two volumes of this trilogy..and I guess it is perfectly great..the plot stays in your mind even afterwards for awhile and the characters look so real...If you like reading,reading smart crime fiction,reading a book you can get lost in...I'd say go for it :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with you wholeheartedly, Mirza, the story is haunting (in a good way, of course). I am not much of a crime reader, but I enjoyed reading it very much. It's definitely a must read :)
