One of the perks of being a blogger is the excitement of getting your readers feedback. It has been years since I started blogging, but the excitement stays the same. I still feel like a newbie blogger who've just got her first comment every time I see the comment notification. I feel appreciated, and of course exalted. I will never get used to this kind of thing, and gosh, how I love it!
This post isn't really about whether you should or should not take time to reply to your incoming comments. This is actually my personal preference, just some insight on why I believe in it. I am by no means a blogging expert, and some bloggers even think that it's old-fashioned, still I have my reasons why it's actually a good idea.
It makes the readers feel welcome
This is an obvious reason, of course. When your door is being knocked, you'll see who's coming and open the door, the guest then are welcome to enter your home. To me, ignored comments are like unwelcome visitors standing outside the door not knowing whether they're allowed to enter or not. I don't know, maybe it's our culture so we feel the need to be as friendly as possible to our guest, offer them drink, do some chitchats and since you cannot offer a drink to your readers, at least saying hello won't hurt.
It ensures the readers that there's a warm person behind the blog
Well, there are many bloggers who treat their blogs as their business, or at least use their blog as a tool to promote their own products or services. In this case, blog readers are potential customers. Would you ignore a potential customer? Of course not! If you have business attached on your blog, it's highly recommended that for you to be as friendly and as approachable as you can. You want to have the traits of someone people want to do business with. Would you spend your hard-earned money to a cold and unapproachable person? I bet you wouldn't.
It sparks interactivity
I understand it would be very time consuming to reply them when you receive 100 comments a day. But let's face the reality, most of us don't get that many. Unless it's for controversial or post that has a lot of drama, hundreds of comments is not really the norm. See, actually it's a doable task. Many bloggers also stated that the one of the reasons they started the blog is to connect with people who share their interest. Commenting back is a good way to connect with them.
It helps increase readerships
One of the most searched blog tips is on how to reach more readers. It's the ultimate goal of many bloggers. Readers tend to come back when feel welcome and appreciated. Well, everybody likes it when they feel welcome. If you care about gaining more readers, this definitely something to considers. Ah, don't forget that most people are silent readers. Only a handful of them really take time to leave comments, and when they do it means your post enlightens them somehow. So, congratulate yourself and thank them.
To sum it up, blogging doesn't have to be a lonely business. You know, people tend to be more motivated when they feel they're not alone. I believe it also applies in blogging. Do you love it when people stop by and leave comments on your post? Blog readers : what makes you comment on a blog?
