DNF Review : Kinslayer by Jay Kristoff

Title : Kinslayer (Lotuswar #2)
Author : Jay Kristoff
Publication date: September 17th 2013 by Thomas Dunne Books

So, what's your first impression when seeing the cover of Kinslayer? I bet you would imagine that the heroine is a bad-ass girl who is superb with sword and afraid of nothing. I mean, look at that wicked tattoos, geez!

Wrong!

The heroine is lame and weak. All she cares about is boys. Slept with one, flirt with the other and this is a 16 year-old girl we're talking about. And you know what, she doesn't really play with her sword, she just acts like a bad-ass, but fails.

Since this is a DNF review, I'd skip the book introduction. I gave up at 50% because I have too many problems with this book. First, it is told in too many point of views. Everyone in the village gets to tell his/her own storyline and guess what, the story is spread to thin and I, as a reader is left confused. I mean, I don't understand what the book really wants. It is thick on pages but thin on plot which means it seriously needs editing. Really, nothing important happens in this book.

Second, the writing style. Arrrghh! It makes me want to pull my hair off. Seriously, it's irritating as hell. I believe the writer wanted it to be somewhat poetic and beautiful, but it just doesn't work. Kinslayer tries so hard to be the coolest book ever, but it can't do the stunt. The coolest part of this book is the cover. Well, reading should be enjoyable, but when I read this one, it felt even worse that doing a chore.

Third, the characters. Gosh, don't get me started. They are all one dimensional and disturbingly flat. The heroine acts as if she's the coolest girl on Earth, the villains pretends they're the worst of them all.

Again, failed stunt *shrugs*

Well, at least there's a quote I like, even after all this mess.
"Family", he would say. "There is nothing more important in this world. Show me a man's friends, I will show you the man. But show me a man's sons, I will show you his future."
1 rating for Kinslayer. I will not continue reading this series nor I would I recommend this to anyone. Unless if you will love any book with pretty covers. Let's talk about you! Have you read anything disappointing lately? What was it?
