Who doesn't love quick reads? After reading serious of heavy books, you might want to relax and read something light and easy. At least, that's my reading habit. It's also the perks of being an omnivorous reader and that way, I can keep reading slump at bay. For today's posts, I have a list of some of my favorite quick reads. Not only they're light and easy, these books also warmed my heart. So, here they are, hopefully they give you some delight too as a start for this new year.
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Read my review here. Let's start with a classic book! When I first read this book, I was very pessimistic. I thought I wouldn't enjoy it just like I didn't with Anne of Green of Gables, but I find Mary to be a very charming little girl. From the author's narration, it seems like most people were so sincere back then. It's a beautiful story about friendship and love. Click here to download the e-book on Project Gutenberg.
Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen
Read my review here. Still about a garden (I wonder why the title "garden" usually catches my attention). Allen's has this talent of captivating her readers with using very minimal magical touch on her story. She's the expert of writing novels set in small town without making it boring. What I love the most of this book is the ending. Don't get me wrong, I love every bits and pieces of it, but the ending is so simply witty and it closes all the unfinished business. Honestly, it's one of the most memorable ending I've come across.
The Moonlight Palace by Liz Rosenberg
Read my review here. I think The Moonlight Palace is one of the most underrated books in 2014. Why it doesn't get the hype, I have no idea. Hopefully, this year it will get some attention it deserves. The book itself is very sweet, the main character is very lovable, despite of her naivety (maybe that's the point!). Heck, all of the characters in this book is lovable, which is perfect for an instant mood-lifting.
The Princess Curse by Merrie Haskell
Read my review here. Oh, I read this years ago during my early blogging days. Geez, now that I read my old reviews, I can't stop laughing, it's so generic. Well, that's the main reason why I would never edit my old post (unless for typos). I'd like to see how much I'm growing. I have no idea if there's a a sequel for the book, but I know the author is still actively writing. The ending is very nice, and there's still room for more story, if the author decides to.
The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate
Read my review here. Even though this is not at all a happy story to begin with, I find not only it warmed my heart, but also gave me food for thought. A lot of it, in fact. The ending let me breathed a relieved sigh and a smile actually was there, despite of the nature of the book. Don't let the cover fool you, though. Although it is a middle grade read, it gave me the same impact adult book does. This is one of those children books to be taken seriously.
And... those are my book recommendations for now. I hope you find it useful. Let's talk about you! Are you a fan of quick reads? What's the last book that warmed your heart?
