To tell you the truth, this book had been sitting in my to-read list for more than a year. I didn't know what made me hesitate to pick it up sooner, I mean, this book has a pretty cover (which I am a sucker for), it's fantasy (my favorite genre), basically it has every elements to be picked sooner by me, but somehow it's the other way around. I guess, it wasn't its luck after all *sigh*
The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom (man, this book has a long title!) is a retelling of world's most famous fairy tales like Rapunzel, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, all crammed in one book, one journey, one world. Sounds exciting? You bet it does! It's a book with a good sense of humor and a kick ass adventure!
Since it's a retelling of fairy tales, maybe I don't have to really describe the detail of the story. I am sure you are already familiar with them.
Or not.
Oh, well. In this book, the princes from the fairy tales were very annoyed with the royal bards (read:singers) because they were never be taken seriously. All the bards did was to spread an inaccurate tale (in form of a song) thus the princes were made fun of by their people. The saying of "you reap what you sow" is famous not without reason, and the bards then were captured by an evil wicked witch and the princes has to save them in order to gain back their reputation (if they had any).
Within the first pages, I found myself laughing out loud while holding my belly. I was in the same condition until I reached the last page. This. Book. Is. Hilarious! I mean it. I am not easy to please, but I am very satisfied with book. Thanks to Healy's talent of writing a very fun book without making it ridiculous. Every humor is added with the right amount, well, to me, it's effortlessly funny.
Now, let's talk about the characters. I can say that the characters in this book are very strong, considering it is aimed for younger readers. Each of their personality shines through their dialogue and actions and they are very memorable. My favorite is Prince Duncan. He might seem to be the weirdest of them all, but he's incredibly loyal and of course funny in his own way.
The storyline of The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom is very fast paced and full of actions (and comedy!) It's so hard to get bored with this book, really. Oh, for those of you serious readers like me, maybe soften your heart a little bit and don't take it too seriously *winks*. It's a fun book, the point of it is too entertain you.
Time for favorite quote!
Time for favorite quote!
“No, Princes Charming," Duncan cheerfully corrected. "'Prince' is the noun; that's what gets pluralized. 'Charming' is an adjective; you can't add an S to it like that.”
High 5 rating for The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom. I love this book with all my heart. Oh, the third book is going to be released this April and since I already finish reading the second book, I cannot wait to get my hands on the third. Oh, the good news is, they're making it into an animated movie, yay! I wonder who the voice actors and actress will be.
Your turn, have you read any funny books, lately? What are they?
