Unless you are living under the rocks, I am sure you are familiar with the tittle. Yes, it's Kristen Stewart (a.k.a Bella Swan) latest movie. This Snow White and the Huntsman we're talking about right now is the novelization version of the movie. I haven't seen the movie, but after I read the book, honestly I become more interested in it. Not to mention that my favorite actress, Charlize Theron is in it too, so yes, I have added the movie into my to-watch list *grins*.
I don't have to tell you how the story of Snow White goes, do I? It's one of the most famous fairytale in the universe, so of course you are familiar with it already. Well, this time it's kind of different then the original story (that's why I love fairytale retelling!). This snow white is a warrior (or should I say, shield maiden?), with a shield and a blade. Sounds cool, isn't it? She's not a damsel in distress at all, she's a kick ass heroine.
The characters are the same, however they have darker personality. The dwarfs for example, they're not cute little people with big noses like we usually know. Instead in this book, they're described as rude little people who swears a lot and always pick a fight with anyone who's willing. Not cute at all.
Snow White and the Huntsman does not have a romantic side like the original story. There's no such thing as "they love happily ever after" in it. Since there's some part of this book which tells about Snow White's childhood, I really wish the author to add more details about it and also as to why the King raided the the Evil Stepmother's village which makes her want a revenge. If there were more details and back story, I think the plot would be more colorful.
I have to say that I like how the author describe the story. I think Lily Blake has done a great job turning the movie into a novel and making it crystal clear to the readers. I can picture the enchanted forest in my mind without a problem, but I can barely feel the characters emotion. I really wish I could connect with their feelings.
Snow White and the Huntsman gets 4 rating for me (I'd give it 5 it there were more emotions in this book). If you are a sucker or fairy tale retelling (like me), this is a must read. Even though I already know how the story ends, I'd still watch the movie (hopefully soon) and I think you should too.
Now, I have a confession to make. I haven't read Twilight series, ssh! If you have, did you enjoy the movie version?

Hi Citra,
ReplyDeleteAs far as my personal taste is concerned, the movie did not convince me. It's good that you haven't seen the movie. I liked the story in the book, but again, there are no convincing emotions, the charm of Snow White and all the fairy tale stuff.
Hello there, srk4you, long time no see :)
DeleteExactly, that's what I thought about SWATHM. The story is nice enough, but I need something that touch my heart rather than she did this, they did that kind of thing, if that makes sense.
