If you are a fan of The Iron Fey series the you must know about The Immortal Rules. Yes, it's Julie Kagawa's latest book, and not like the previous novels, this time the story is about vampires. I haven't read The Iron Fey, to be honest but I know for sure that the series is not about the bloodsucker at all *grins*.
This book is about an orphan girl, Allison Sekemoto who lived in the Fringe, an area outside the Vampire City. Allison was used to hunger, despite of that she would try hard to find food. One day, she was attacked by monsters leaving her on near death experience. The this mysterious vampire guy came and gave her two choices. Dead as human or live as vampire.
I like how Julie Kagawa tells her story. The description is crystal clear without being too wordy and it's pretty easy to comprehend the entire tale. Her writing style has convinced me enough to read other works of her (hopefully I could read them all soon enough). To tell you the truth, this is not the typical young adult vampire novels that depicted the male vampire as a charming guy. The vampires here are not charming at all, in fact they're heartless (they're dead, what can you expect?) creature who treat humans as their cattle.
The world building is amazing and is done very smoothly. However, there are some parts of The Immortal Rules that left me muttering "man, that can't be right!". For instance, there is a scene where Allison and her friends were looking for food in an abandoned house. Since the world was beaten by plague for more than a decade, it's quite impossible for those canned food to be edible.
Now, for the plot. It seems to me that all Allison did was wandering around with the people she met. There was no real adventure of a kick ass girl with sharp katana. The book is thicker than it should be and to me. As a reader, I want more stories, more conflicts more twist and turns. Don't get me wrong, though, I think the book is quite good, but it doesn't touch my heart in anyway.
One more thing, the cover doesn't really represent Allison. In the book, it was clearly stated that Allison is Asian, but take a look at the cover! The model doesn't look Asian at all. Ugh! If it were up to me, I'd be sure to request revision. The picture is good, actually, but it doesn't match the story.
3 rating for this book. I would definitely read the sequel (I know we still have to wait for that), but I am interested enough to find out about what would happen with Allison. If you are a fan of urban fantasy, or need something new in vampire tale, be sure to add The Immortal Rules into your to-read list.
Now, over to you. Have you read other works of Julie Kagawa? Are you a fan of The Iron Fey series?
