Honestly, I don't know what to begin this review with. I am quite emotional right now, thanks to The Fault in Our Stars, so I can say that I am now speechless. It is not by all means the saddest book I have ever read, Well, I did let go a tear or two, however that's not the point, I guess. I am sure that's not the reason why John Green wrote this book in the first place.
Two teenagers, Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters met in a cancer support group. Augustus had his feet amputated while Hazel has to live with the oxygen tool attached with her for the rest of her life because her lungs (according to Hazel), sucks at being lungs. They were both almost has nothing in common, Augustus is popular boy, he used to play basketball, while Hazel Graze had to quit school because of her condition. But despite of those things, they share their love for literature, especially books and poems and one day they went to Amsterdam to meet their favorite author and the stories then continues.
I am glad because I didn't find The Fault in Our Stars to be a typical soapy teenager book with a love triangle conflict. The dialogues are written very well, they didn't sound too juvenile. The plot went smoothly and I like the characters in the book. Being a teenager may be stressful for some people (let alone having cancer grow in your body) and I personally think that the book has a message for us to be more grateful. Do you still have both of your legs or well functioning lungs? Well, be glad because there are some people out there whose every breath they take is a complete struggle.
Oh, how I wish every young adult book to be this good! John Green has done a great sending a message to his readers via this book. It made me laugh, it also made me cry. Those people with cancer never need our pity, so do not pity them. They need us to support and understand them.
I recommend The Fault in Our Stars to young adult book lovers who want something different or those of you who are looking for a book that will play with your emotions. Yes, this is quite an easy read, but, well, it's not a happy one.
5 rating for this book. Go ahead and add it to your to-read list, if you haven't done it!
